The airplane was invented in 1903. Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947.
It took us just under 44 years to go from wood, cloth, pipe and wire (moving at a brisk 6.8mph at an approximate altitude of 10 feet) to steel alloys rocketing through the upper atmosphere (45,000ft) more than one hundred times faster (700mph). That will never cease to amaze me.
